- World Antimicrobial Awareness Week: CAMBOHUN, FAO and, RUA Disseminate AMR Information to the Public
In Cambodia, farmers, animal health workers, animal health specialists and the public still lack knowledge regarding antimicrobial resistance (AMR) even though many awareness campaigns have been held those past years. One of the most concrete examples is the use of antibiotic to threat Covid-19 in the country. CAMBOHUN collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) to raise awareness on this growing issue among the concerned population. AMR becomes a growing issue and concern throughout the world as the resistance huge impact on animal health, human health, and environmental health in the future. Dr. Pheng Vutha, CAMBOHUN Coordinator, stressed “AMR is currently a global and invisible thread across the sectors. Fighting and controlling this issue requires a collaborative multi-sectorial approach. This is in line with CAMBOHUN as well as other mission of One Health University Networks to sustain the One Health professionals with cross-sectoral expertise in solving the emerging public health threats including AMR.” To tackle this issue, CAMBOHUN, FAO and RUA organized a webinar event during the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) under a global theme, “Spread Awareness, Stop Resistance” on 23 November 2021 where 33 participants attended at RUA while 190 joined online. With this hybrid form, it can both ensure Covid 19 safety and a large number of public outreach. This event successfully raised awareness about the risks of AMR, and the collaboration and works done by CAMBOHUN and its partners in fighting against antimicrobial resistance. - One Health Camp Implementation during the COVID-19 Pandemic
The One Health Camp is an annual event, which focuses on various topics, including veterinary, public health, preventive medicine, and nursing. This event is an opportunity to enhance risk awareness from students to the public. Due to the COVID-19 situation, this year’s event, which was originally planned to be held in Can Tho city, was revised to be conducted solely online from August 20th to 22nd, 2021. To be selected for the OHC, students took an online test with twenty questions related to the avian influenza and wrote an essay answering the following question: “Due to mass media about COVID-19 vaccine’s side effects, many people are afraid of making the decision vaccinate or not. What is your opinion?” They were also instructed to record a video presentation on this topic: “From your point of view, which core competencies are necessary to implement a successful risk communication?”. In total, seventy submissions were received within twenty-three days. Thirty-nine students were selected from the test and one additional student, winner of the “Wildlife Disease Risk Communication Plan Competition” in March 2021, all had the opportunity to attend the camp. Prior to the start of the online camp, the forty students were divided into four groups. Three rounds of challenges were conducted: an online knowledge test, a debate contest, and a video contest; all used to examine the competencies of the candidates. The first day and first challenge was the online knowledge test. Prior to taking the test, the students learned about avian flu, risk communication methods, and gender considerations in risk communication. Group 2 (Phenomenon) was in the lead after taking the 10-question test at the end of the day. On the first and second days of the debate contest groups 2 and 3 were identified as semi-finalists. Once again, group 2 (Phenomenon) won the challenge. The final and most interesting part of OHC was the video contest on avian influenza. Each group was required to involve all members in creating an engaging video explaining Avian flu and how it harms animal and human health. Participants and onlookers awaited the results to be announced and awards distributed at the VOHUN Annual Meeting (September, 2021): 3rd place: Group 1 (Golden Duckies) and Group 4 2nd place: Group 2 “Phenomenon” 1st place: Shining Star Despite the change in venue, the event still received positive comments. Students gained not just technical, but soft skills and hands-on experience through the OHC. We look forward to another successful OHC in the coming year, no matter the venue. 1st place: Shining Star
- One Health in the Virtual Park: Increasing Knowledge and Awareness of the Public on Health Issues
Misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda have spread from several sources of media and rapidly shared on social networks. This phenomena exacerbates the COVID-19 situation and may cause difficulties in the COVID-19 management and harm to public security. Thailand One Health University Network (THOHUN) initiated “One Health in the Park” to increase One Health (OH) knowledge through risk communication events for the public and to develop the visibility of OH and THOHUN to Thai society. This monthly activity takes the form of a talk show or a debate of multi-disciplinary experts, influencers, and stakeholders on COVID-19 and other interested public health parties in Thai society. These events will usually be organized in open-air spaces or parks. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the format was completely transformed to be live-stream broadcasted through social media, THOHUN, and partner’s websites. Question and answer sessions were provided and became an effective way of encouraging interaction between the speakers and the audience whenever clarifications were needed. After the events, the presentations were edited to highlight the information presented during the event and to communicate with a specific audience, through the THOHUN’s Facebook fan page, Perceptia blog, and online news agencies. Publication of the post-event articles is not only a mechanism to advocate for THOHUN’s activities but also intends to inspire people who could not attend the event and motivate them to participate in the future. The topic for the kickoff event in July 2021 was “Ideal COVID-19 vaccines and the vaccines that are suitable for Thailand’s context,” which, for obvious reasons, is of current interest for the public. Through this topic, THOHUN gathered a total of 8,233 views and 160 persons connected simultaneously during the peak live viewers. THOHUN looks forward to more people attending the live events in the future and accessing the recorded Facebook live video posted at the THOHUN’s Facebook fanpage: https://www.facebook.com/NCOTHOHUN Responses and feedback of this first event were beyond THOHUN’s expectations with very positive comments from the participants and viewers. This initial event will be an effective platform for the reciprocal communication and engagement of THOHUN, health care providers, and public health administrators with the public regarding emerging infectious diseases
- Developing Opportunities, Risk Awareness and Networking Through One Health Students Club (OHSC)
Building a strong and resilient One Health Workforce is a priority for MyOHUN. Involving students in One Health-based activity is one of the most effective means to better prepare them to prevent, fight and respond to infectious disease outbreaks in the future. MyOHUN established One Health Student Clubs as part of the network in 2016 and currently has eight OHSCs in Malaysia. As one may say, “education is the path to innovation”. OHSCs help to empower students with vital One Health competencies before they graduate. Furthermore, by educating the next generation of One Health workforce, the views and values of tomorrow’s society will be strengthened on the concepts and practices of One Health. The current COVID-19 pandemic best illustrates the importance and need to better equip our future One Health workforce that benefits the human-animal-environment interaction. MyOHUN’s student-based activities, such as In-Situ Problem Based Learning and One Health Young Leaders and Communicators, have moulded students’ understanding of One Health and multidisciplinary approach at the basic level. Through OHSCs, which consist of activities on zoonotic diseases transmission and prevention, community outreach programs in rural areas with indigenous people, seminars and forums on One Health provide and enhance a strong educational experience for students to appreciate and understand that a multidisciplinary approach to solving problems will have a more unified outcome. Recently, a team of Malaysian students named Panthera Tigris, won the SEAOHUN Students’ Regional Competition 2021 (national level) and the Public Pick Award (international level).Their video talked about environmental degradation, wildlife in the ecosystem, and zoonotic disease outbreaks reached more than 39,000 views on YouTube. This risk-awareness video and its success istangible proof of the widespread influence of OHSC activities. Last year, Ainaa Sabihah Binti Mohamed Anuar from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) won first prize in the Poster Category for the SEAOHUN COVID-19 Digital Awareness Challenge. She was inspired to join the competition after participating in the One Health Young Leaders and Communicators activity which helped her understand and value the importance of One Health. “I realize that there are more responsibilities ahead of me in terms of educating the public about zoonosis and the One Health approach.” Ainaa Sabihah stated when asked about what she had gained from the MyOHUN activities. Students' creativity and enthusiasm to embrace One Health indirectly influence younger generations on the importance of working together hand-in-hand. MyOHUN will continue to invest in educating the next generation to ensure a strong, resilient, and reliant One Health workforce. As the saying goes, “if you want a better future, invest now!”
- Health Communication Training for Students and Lecturers
According to the government daily situation reports on the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, more than one million people were identified as infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, resulting in over forty-thousand deaths as of April 2021 (Government of Indonesia, Indonesia COVID-19 Distribution Map, covid19.go.id, April 4, 2021). To contain the pandemic and protect the citizens from further transmission, the government issued various regulations and guidelines. The first regulation, issued on March 31, 2020, required the closure of schools, many workplaces, banned mass gatherings, socio-cultural activities, among other restrictions. The regulation was then modified on February 9, 2021, to mandate working, learning, worship, and other daily activities from home. With limited movement of people, online communication has become crucial for delivering health and risk communication messages to the public. The challenge to reach different kinds of audiences that vary in their level of knowledge regarding how to protect themselves, and in their ability to understand how old habits and other behavior could cause more infections has driven INDOHUN to train health influencers. Health Influencers are those who have the reputation, knowledge, and expertise to responsibly guide and encourage people to follow safe practices in this time. One potential type of health influencer, university lecturers, can produce social media posts regarding best practices based on research. However, many lecturers are not likely to have laymen terminology, concepts of digital communication and the understanding of audiences’ socio-cultural background and local wisdom. To narrow this gap, INDOHUN with the support from the USAID One Health Workforce Next Generation and the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Higher Education, conducted three batches of health communication training. This training aimed to enhance the lecturers’ digital communication skills in constructing scientific yet audience-friendly digital communication materials on health, particularly to effectively communicate pandemic-relevant information to online audiences based on their local wisdom. The two-day online training offered additional tools to the participants who are already active on social media yet have no formal communication training. Knowing audiences and their socio-cultural background better to be able to share a targeted message is particularly relevant for social media platforms. INDOHUN demonstrated effective and good communication between the trainer, facilitator, moderator, and the participants by using the blended learning method combining one-way presentation, active discussion, role play, and workshop experiences around making good communication materials. This online training gained lot of positive feedback on the delivery and content. As one participants stated in the training evaluation feedback form, “This training provides new knowledge for us who do not have a background in communication to be able to make better public service messages. [It showed] How does the message made by us deliver to the recipient without any change in meaning due to false interpretation.” With this training, INDOHUN is paving the way for more health influencers to reach the public on risk-awareness and prevention.
- Thi Hoa Vu: A Resilient Path to One Health Excellence
“The SEAOHUN fellowship at ILRI is a precious opportunity, which has not only enhanced my knowledge and research skills in the One Health approach but also has connected me to the One Health network with leading scientists and experts all over the world.” Thi Hoa Vu was one of SEAOHUN’s 2022 Fellows and previously lectured at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam. Her One Health journey began in 2016 while completing the Master of Environment postgraduate program at the University of Melbourne (UM). Hoa had high One Health career expectations after completing her master’s degree and was eager to pursue a PhD. Unfortunately, she was denied several PhD scholarship opportunities after a three-year gap due to maternity leave post-graduation. In her application to the 2022 SEAOHUN Fellowship Program, she explained her circumstances and expressed the desire to help advance the One Health agenda through her teachings at TUAF. After much anticipation, Hoa was selected and matched with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Vietnam, a worldwide leader in food and global health security. Thi Hoa Vua was assigned to work on the CGIAR Initiative on Protecting Human Health through a One Health Approach and the ICT4Health project funded by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. She was a valuable team member and supported both projects across a broad spectrum of activities. Hoa assisted with launching the kick-off workshop to initiate the projects’ implementation and participated in a wildlife farm field site visit. Additionally, she performed data analysis on field surveys regarding COVID-19’s effect on animal consumption in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Through these activities, she gained practical experience and engaged with high-profile ILRI partners like the Vietnam One Health University Network (VOHUN), Thai Nguyen province Center for Disease Control (CDC), and her previous employer TUAF. Hoa described her SEAOHUN Fellowship experience at ILRI as a “precious opportunity.” The fellowship enhanced her One Health knowledge base and research skills while expanding her global network of One Health peers and mentors. As a result of her hard work and dedication during the fellowship period, Thi Hoa Vu was finally awarded a scholarship to pursue a PhD and began her studies at Deakin University, Australia, in December 2022.

This program allowed them to explore One Health perspectives while immersing themselves in diverse cultures over a three -month period from May to July 2023. Recently, I had a good time sitting down with Gerard Jack Nidhan, who prefers to be called Jack, to delve into his enriching internship experience with SEAOHUN. Jack is an ambitious NUS undergraduate majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Public Health. He pursued an internship with SEAOHUN to delve into global health and environmental sustainability, particularly in the context of One Health, a subject he had limited exposure to before. Beside academics, Jack is an avid sportsman, currently, passionate about Muay Thai, and has a strong love for nature, evident in his volunteer work with Singapore’s National Parks Board (NParks), contributing to conservation initiatives. "SSHSPH is grateful for the internship collaboration with SEAOHUN in providing meaningful learning opportunities in the area of One Health for our undergraduate public health students. We look forward to a continued collaboration with Dr Vipat Kuruchittham and his team." - Dr. Cecilia Teng, Internship module coordinator, NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health Q: What motivated you to apply for this internship with SEAOHUN? A: Before this internship, I had limited exposure to One Health. I was eager to explore global health and sustainability, and SEAOHUN's dedication to collaboration intrigued me. This was a chance to expand my horizons, gain insights into One Health, and contribute to meaningful initiatives. Q: What were your most memorable moments during the internship? A: During my internship at SEAOHUN, there were numerous memorable moments, but the most impactful one was the mentor rotation experience. This unique opportunity allowed me to be mentored by colleagues specializing in different aspects of One Health, each with diverse skill sets. Their valuable insights and perspectives enriched my understanding of One Health holistically, going beyond my initial focus. The experience encouraged me to ask questions, seek guidance, and actively engage in discussions, fostering a strong sense of belonging within the team. It highlighted the importance of building professional relationships and seeking mentorship for continuous learning and personal growth. Q: How was the dynamic team at SEAOHUN? Did you collaborate often? A: The team at SEAOHUN was incredibly dynamic, fostering a collaborative and passionate environment around One Health. Whether it was my immediate team members or international colleagues, everyone was approachable and eager to share their knowledge and expertise. Despite being an intern with limited experience, I felt valued, and my opinions were genuinely appreciated and considered. The team actively integrated my input into their projects, which was a gratifying experience. Throughout my internship, I had numerous opportunities to collaborate with various team members on different projects. These collaborations not only enhanced my teamwork skills but also exposed me to diverse perspectives and problem-solving approaches. The supportive and inclusive atmosphere at SEAOHUN allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the team's endeavors and significantly enriched my internship journey. Q: Can you share a specific project that you are proud of? A: One specific achievement that I take considerable pride in is my involvement in the initial preparatory work for the SEAOHUN Regional Student Competition 2023. During this project, I took on the responsibility of drafting the concept note, planning the announcement posts, and designing the certificate. Crafting the concept note allowed me to showcase my research and writing skills while ensuring clarity and coherence in conveying the competition's objectives and requirements. Planning the announcement posts gave me a chance to exercise my creativity in effectively communicating essential information to the participants and the public, boosting engagement and awareness. “SEAOHUN’s Internship offers a unique chance to learn from our dynamic team engaged in regional One Health capacity building programs in Southeast Asia. It is also a great opportunity to gain experience from a multicultural environment and collaborating with diverse partners and stakeholders from multiple countries.” - Dr. Aye Chan Oo, SEAOHUN Internship's Co-supervisor Q: How did this internship contribute to your personal and professional growth? Working in a diverse environment broadened my perspective on global health, strengthening my passion for One Health. This internship profoundly impacted my study aspirations and future goals. It solidified my commitment to One Health and inspired me to focus on infectious and zoonotic disease research. I'm now dedicated to promoting One Health principles in my future academic and professional pursuits. Q: Any final thoughts? A: I want to emphasize the significance of adopting a One Health approach to tackle the intricate health issues we face today. Recognizing the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health calls for collaborative and creative solutions. - Art to Communicate AMR: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
In celebration of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) on 18 – 24 November 2022, SEAOHUN hosted its 3rd Annual Regional Student Competition with the theme of “Art to Communicate Antimicrobial Resistance”, in partnership with USAID One Health Workforce – Next Generation (OHW-NG) consortium, Zoetis and Pfizer. In this online art competition, undergraduate students from SEAOHUN member countries, entered as two member teams with the supervision of one faculty mentor to create digital and/or non-digital image art to communicate to non-scientific communities about the importance of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Being the silent pandemic of this era and responsible for more than 700,000 deaths globally every year, the public needs to be more educated about AMR. Raising awareness with a touch of creativity, such as communication using Art is a great way to spread the awareness of AMR among the communities. “Using Art is such amazing and fun idea to raise AMR awareness in creative way. The webinar also provided the knowledge and information of AMR and tips for drawing. I learned that messages conveyed in the form of art can educate the non-scientific community effectively and easily. Through this competition, I gained a lot of new experiences by working as a team, generating scientific ideas and converting into artwork.” – Rachana Dorn, Whale Team, Cambodia The competition was launched on 21st September 2022 and followed by a webinar titled “Communicating the Impact of AMR through Art” on 26th September 2022. The webinar was joined by interested students. The speakers from OHW-NG shared the overview of AMR and know-hows of science communications in the form of art. 47 teams (129 participants) from 7 SEAOHUN member countries participated in the competition: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam with a total submission of 58 art pieces. Winner of Non- Digital Arts And Winner of Digital Arts The final winners’ art pieces were featured in SEAOHUN social media during WAAW and via public voting, non-digital art winning team from Vietnam “TBUMP One Health Club” won the Public Pick Award with 502 votes within 24 hours. Student teams participated in this year’s competition proved that “A picture is worth a thousand words” by demonstrating their ability to create art in informative and engaging ways to educate the community. The competition enabled regional students to upgrade their technical knowledge and creative skills to communicate with the public regarding One Health issues while strengthening the networking and teamwork through collaboration. These accomplishments will foster the young professionals from multidisciplinary backgrounds to learn and apply the One Health concept to stimulate good practices in the communities. SEAOHUN conveys heartfelt appreciation to our partners USAID, Zoetis and Pfizer for their valuable contribution for the success of SEAOHUN 2022 Regional Student Competition. “The competition was such a unique approach to spread awareness by creativity. It was never easy to educate people about health issues by just telling information. Art is a good way to attract people in giving the health messages where they can absorb the information easily. Public health professionals should also think about more flexible and creative ideas in spreading health education and awareness to the community.”– Abdul Latiff Bin Sabri, Kaizen Team, Malaysia
