- SEAOHUN Alumnus Contributing to World Antimicrobial Awareness Week
Introducing SEAOHUN Alumnus: I am Gavrila Amadea, a veterinarian graduating from the Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia, one of Indonesia One Health University Network (INDOHUN) university members, and a 2018 SEAOHUN Fellow. Currently, I am pursuing a master’s degree in Infectious Disease and One Health (IDOH), Erasmus Mundus Joint master’s degree in Université de Tours, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the University of Edinburgh. I strongly advocate for One Health because it is a form of collaboration in which diversity is celebrated. Through One Health approach, we become more aware of this world’s interdependence, in which every action leads to multiple effects in various realms. As I dive deeper into One Health, I acquire more skills and knowledge, but I also realize that there are many more things I do not know. Since no one can be an expert in all aspects of One Health, I chose to learn how to communicate and build trust with other people to work effectively together in addition to advancing my technical skills. I was introduced to One Health during my undergraduate year through activities held by INDOHUN. I participated in their “Leadership Training and One Health Youth Forum” that introduced me to One Health concept and learning One Health opened many new opportunities for me. INDOHUN engaged students in various ways, such as participation in the Global Health True Leader and the Seed Funding. I had the opportunity to join Asian Veterinary Volunteering Project in Thailand and Vietnam as a representative of my university. This led me to create a small research project on Participatory Epidemiology in Kediri, Indonesia, with support from INDOHUN. After I graduated, SEAOHUN opened a huge opportunity for me: a five-month fellowship in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) in Bangkok, Thailand. This experience tremendously broadened my network and knowledge. After completing the fellowship, I was invited to work with FAO Indonesia for a short period before I joined IDOH master program. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a global health problem, compromising the ability to treat diseases, and causing a huge financial burden. It is an issue requiring multi-sectoral approach to solve because AMR impacts not only human, but animals and their shared environment. Thus, One Health approach is needed. I would like to present my abstract on AMR research. This research is part of IDOH master assignment to assess the current level of AMR awareness among people. It aims to promote research among students and disseminate the information to raise awareness and educate the public. I would like to give credits to my colleague who took part in this mini-research, namely Dr. Suju Jamarkattel, Mrs. Melina Joshi, Ms. Shu-Yu Lin, Dr. Gabriela Castellanos, and Dr. Guan-Jhou Chen. Also, I am grateful to our professor, Dr. Laila Darwich for her guidance.

Please join, webinar series topic: COVID-19 Pandemic from a Multisector Biorisk Management Perspective - Experience from Viet Nam on Friday, December 4th, 2020. 10:00 AM ICT Thursday, December 3rd (USA) US: 10:00pm EDT 8:00 pm MDT, 7:00 pm PDT Vietnam One Health University Network (VOHUN) in collaboration with U.S. Department of Defense Biological Threat Reduction Program (BTRP) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) will host the seventh session of the remote engagement case based learning series on “COVID-19 Pandemic from a Biorisk Management Perspective” The world is currently battling a pandemic that is caused by a novel coronavirus termed SARS-CoV-2. An infectious disease outbreak like SARS-CoV-2 can lead to particularly high infection rates in areas where diagnostic laboratory support is limited. Many regions of the world are facing the challenge of quickly ramping up diagnostic capacities. When dealing with infectious agents, it is very important to establish and implement a strong Biorisk Management System. The aim for the session is to highlight Vietnam’s strategic approach in successfully containing SARS-CoV-2 from multiple fronts. Through an effective multi sectoral coordination, Viet Nam has excelled in controlling the spread of infections through strong leadership and coordination, rapid case detection and isolation, and rigorous contact tracing. The session will offer an interactive dialogue and knowledge sharing by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and related stakeholders discussing the experience in preparedness and response to COVID-19 from a BRM One Health Perspective. This will be followed by an expert panel discussion with representatives from Vietnam Government and U.S.CDC and a Q&A session. - Reflecting on One Health in Action During the COVID-19 Response
One Health is very relevant to the current pandemic. It is concerned with interactions and dependencies in complex systems and promotes a sustainability-oriented approach of health that brings together natural and social sciences and is characterized by collaboration, participation, sharing, and exchange in a framework of knowledge integration in health. A key feature is the concept of shared responsibility, with the potential for innovative and non-uniform solutions to manage complex problems. (Photo credit: ESCAP) “During this period, we were discussing options to reshape response measures in the surveillance commission because in Kinshasa capital city cases were still rising. At that time, the herd immunity theory that was discussed during the AFROHUN COVID-19 session on immunity issues and interventions for COVID-19. We learned more about it and about the advances in vaccine development. This improved my knowledge, which I shared, and helped us to focus on improving our testing capacities, as there is no evidence supporting such a theory.” Dr. Marc Yambayamba, AFROHUN country manager in DRC, member of the national COVID-19 surveillance team. - Global Risk Communication and Community Engagement Strategy COVID-19 ( December 2020 - May 2021 )
COVID-19 is more than a health crisis; it is also an information and socio-economic crisis. The pandemic and the associated response are prompting the deepest global recession in nearly a century and pushing an estimated 70-100 million more people into extreme poverty. Download Global Risk Communication and Community Engagement Strategy COVID-19 (December 2020 -May 2021) A revised RCCE strategy was needed to reflect this and the learning from the response to-date. The new strategy will cover six months from December 2020 to May 2021. Analysis of socio-behavioral data shows us some broad trends. In general, people know about COVID-19 and the preventive measures necessary. However, people are becoming complacent and risk perceptions are lowering. In general, people are feeling less confident in what they can do to control the virus. As the pandemic becomes more protracted, pandemic fatigue is increasing. The growing fatigue, the stress caused by uncertainty, lowering risk perceptions and reducing trust in government responses, is taking its toll on the fabric of our communities. There is an unprecedented need to elevate the role RCCE plays in breaking the chains of transmission and mitigating the impact of the pandemic. Until biomedical tools such as vaccines or treatments are developed and widely available, people’s behaviors and their willingness to follow public health and social measures remain the most powerful tools to stop the spread of the virus. The revised RCCE strategy is underpinned by a socio-behavioral trends analysis and builds on the learnings from the response to-date. The shift presented in the document is towards the community engagement and participatory approaches that have been proven to help control and eliminate outbreaks in the past.
