Dr. Dennis Carroll's Keynote Address at SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference
Updated: Sep 17, 2022
Dr. Dennis Carroll, Chair of Leadership Board, Global Virome Project, provided a powerful keynote address titled "One Health in the Age of Pandemics and Climate Change" at the SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference, Thailand.
“Look at risks associated with climate change and actions we need to take. Those risks are rapidly evolving and changing,” Dr. Dennis said, urging participants to expand One Health Vision. “We know what to do. We know how to do it. What we need to do is to commit ourselves to do it now.”
Dr. Carroll challenged the audience to rethink the meaning of health; not only human health but also how we live and work in a larger ecosystem. The reason for this is climate change and the tremendous impact it has had and will continue to have on public health and the overall well-being of people, animals, and the environment. By providing data on global warming and its correlation with rising temperatures and myriad of global problems, Dr. Carroll made it clear that we must act without haste and that a multisectoral response is urgently needed to respond, not only to immediate public health threats but to climate change as a whole. While the overall picture of health and climate change is bleak, Dr. Carroll offered optimism that tools, knowledge, and resources are available if actors have the will to respond in concert. This includes continuing to build and strengthen the One Health workforce, leveraging and investing in existing and emerging technology, and engaging all sectors including government, private sector, academia, NGOs, civil society, and local community as a "whole-of-government and whole-of-society".
