News Release: SEAOHUN 2022 Student Summit Developing One Health Leaders of the Future

Bangkok, 18 September 2022 - Kasetsart University, Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN) and Thailand One Health University Network (THOHUN) recently held the SEAOHUN 2022 Student Summit.

Funded by Chevron and US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Summit’s objectives were to:

• Expand the students’ knowledge and skills on One Health topics.

• Gain practical knowledge regarding One Health from field activities.

• Strengthen the networking and connections among students in the region.

• Foster future One Health leaders by strengthening One Health Core competencies such as leadership and critical thinking.

The Summit was held in-person from 3rd to 5th September 2022 on Kasetsart University (Kamphaeng Saen Campus) in Nakhon Pathom province, Thailand. There were fun activities for the students to bond and share One Health knowledge including visits to farms. After the Summit, the students joined the SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference from 6th to 7th September 2022 at Grand Richmond Hotel, Nonthaburi, Thailand.

“We were excited to organize the SEAOHUN Student Summit 2022. Being our first in-person meeting of its kind since 2019, the Summit enabled students to learn from each other and One Health practitioners through hands-on field work. We know that the knowledge and application of the One Health concept can make our world safer from infectious disease threats.” noted Dr Vipat Kuruchittham, SEAOHUN Executive Director.

Kurt Glaubitz, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Chevron Asia Pacific, said “We are proud to have supported the SEAOHUN Student Summit 2022 and help train the next generation of One Health professionals. This will help better prepare Southeast Asian nations to combat infectious disease outbreaks.”

Fifty-three participants from eight countries participated in the Summit. This included 41 participants from teams that won a regional video competition. They were from seven SEAOHUN Member countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand (two teams), and Vietnam. In addition, there were five participants from Taiwan (TAOHUN).
