- One Health site visits during SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference
To kick off the SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference, a One Health site visit to Chonburi province was organized for 40 participants on 5 September. Hosted by the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases Clinical Center (TRC EIDCC), King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and School of Global Health, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, the visit started at Wat Luang Phrommawat, a Buddhist temple and a home to Lyle's flying foxes (Pteropus lylei). The flying foxes, while critical to the ecosystem, is a natural reservoir of Nipah virus. In Thailand, Nipah virus was first found in 2002 but there is no report of infection in pigs or humans. The visit included a brief presentation from the Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University on the foods these bats eat and how data related to them are collected using high-resolution GPS tracking. Safe and effective techniques to collect pooled bat urine samples to test for #Nipahvirus were demonstrated. After visiting Wat Luang Phrommawat, the group continued to Wat Luang health promoting hospital where the host Institutes and Ecohealth Alliance presented Nipah virus surveillance in Thailand, and how bats and humans can live safely together. The visit demonstrated One Health approach in action and the importance of practitioners from different disciplines collaborating together to protect humans, animals, and their shared environment. - Dr. Dennis Carroll's Keynote Address at SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference
Dr. Dennis Carroll, Chair of Leadership Board, Global Virome Project, provided a powerful keynote address titled "One Health in the Age of Pandemics and Climate Change" at the SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference, Thailand. “Look at risks associated with climate change and actions we need to take. Those risks are rapidly evolving and changing,” Dr. Dennis said, urging participants to expand One Health Vision. “We know what to do. We know how to do it. What we need to do is to commit ourselves to do it now.” Dr. Carroll challenged the audience to rethink the meaning of health; not only human health but also how we live and work in a larger ecosystem. The reason for this is climate change and the tremendous impact it has had and will continue to have on public health and the overall well-being of people, animals, and the environment. By providing data on global warming and its correlation with rising temperatures and myriad of global problems, Dr. Carroll made it clear that we must act without haste and that a multisectoral response is urgently needed to respond, not only to immediate public health threats but to climate change as a whole. While the overall picture of health and climate change is bleak, Dr. Carroll offered optimism that tools, knowledge, and resources are available if actors have the will to respond in concert. This includes continuing to build and strengthen the One Health workforce, leveraging and investing in existing and emerging technology, and engaging all sectors including government, private sector, academia, NGOs, civil society, and local community as a "whole-of-government and whole-of-society". - Applying One Health to Build Collaboration between School and Community
Applying One Health to Build Collaboration between School and Community through Student Health Assessment In Thailand, a health-promoting school (HPS) program is being implemented nationwide. To complement the HPS program, Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Tropical Medicine and Public Health (TROPMED) Network in collaboration with SEAMEO Regional Centre for STEM Education (STEM-ED), is currently piloting the “One Health Education in the School Setting” in Rujirapat School”, a Thai- Myanmar border school in Ratchaburi province. The project aims to promote concepts of “One Health” through the engagement of school officials, teachers and the community to help prevent the spread and transmission of zoonotic diseases. One of the major project activities is to undertake health assessment of students that will serve as baseline for improvement after health interventions. During 18-22 July 2022, with the support from Chevron and Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN), SEAMEO TROPMED conducted “Student Health Assessment” at Rujirapat School. Medical doctors and health practitioners assessed health of over 1,000 students from kindergartens 2-3 and from Grades 1-9. The week-long health assessment activity begun with teachers’ orientation on related activities to provide program explanation and to build understanding on each activity: stool examination, Hemoglobin determination, and physical assessment. Informed consents were given by parents/guardians before the assessment. The health assessment data are encrypted to ensure anonymity before analyses. Depending on the results, the SEAMEO TROPMED team will implement One Health education and appropriate interventions, including discussion with school officials, deworming and referral to health facility for further diagnostic and treatment, to improve health of the students. The students’ heath will be assessed again in the second semester to measure the improvement contributed by the program.
